Explanation of Event levels

Local events are usually low key and in the 'localised' area, ideal for newcomers to try the sport. Training are non competitive events used for training and coaching, aimed at members of the club, but they can attract people from neighbouring clubs, and are often ideal for newcomers to try the sport. Regional events attract participants from around the local Region, National events are high quality competitions that will attract people from far away, Major events are Major Events such as a British Championships.

Overview

A local Christmas fun family event at Newlands Corner, extending on to Merrow Downs. If you haven't orienteered before, come and give it a go - we'll be happy to get you started.

Mince pies, sausages (including veggie) and mulled wine will be available for a small donation. Christmas trees are usually on sale near the visitor centre.

Directions / Parking

The event centre and parking is at Newlands Corner car park. Other modes of transport are possible - cycle, train, bus. There are 2 railway stations in Guildford: the mainline station it is 3.7 miles away; London Road station only 3 miles. Bus number 1 runs every half an hour from Guildford's Friary bus station, and stops at High Path Road near Merrow Downs. From there it is a 2 mile walk/jog to Newlands Corner through the woods. Use cycle.travel journey planner to plan your route by bike (note Newlands Corner is at the top of a hill!). The bike racks have been temporarily removed during construction work but you can leave your bike by the enquiries tent and we'll keep an eye on it.

Map / Terrain

Open south facing slopes. Woodlands to the north, on to Merrow Downs. Areas of pits, old bracken and some brambles. Every effort has been made to avoid extensive areas of brambles.

Course Information

Short Blue, Short Green, Orange and Yellow courses.

There will also be a free String course for young novice orienteers!

£6 senior, £3 junior until 11 December; then +50p for late entry subject to map availability

Only well-behaved dogs please! On a lead around the car park and at Start.
