Local level event

Explanation of Event levels

Local events are usually low key and in the 'localised' area, ideal for newcomers to try the sport. Training are non competitive events used for training and coaching, aimed at members of the club, but they can attract people from neighbouring clubs, and are often ideal for newcomers to try the sport. Regional events attract participants from around the local Region, National events are high quality competitions that will attract people from far away, Major events are Major Events such as a British Championships.

Planner's Comments - Phil Conway, GO

I hope everyone enjoyed the courses at Newlands & St Martha's today. Well done to everyone who managed to find their way through the famous yew trees and through or round the brambles. I aimed to plan challenging courses suitable for the SLOW Club Championship (congratulations to the worthy winners).

The key to success on Newlands is to understand the variety of detailed vegetation, not a skill we normally practice in the South East! The map by Tom Edelsten of GO is impressively detailed and it was a joy to plan the courses and check out all the controls sites.

Many thanks to Fred, Carol, James, Keiko, Tom, Neil and Kezia who helped to check and collect controls.  Many hands make light work.

Happy Christmas and wishing you good orienteering in 2026!

Organiser's thanks

As well as Phil's redoubtable team of helpers, I want to thank Phil himself for stepping up to plan when we discovered that SLOW wanted to hold their Club Champs at our event. John who planned and organised his annual PantO with very few additional helpers (most notably Tom in Santa hat being a roving control - Prince Charming of course!). Barbara produced the festive food to wonderful effect with Dave (in the Johnny Craddock role?). For the rest of the organising we all pitched in here and there, assisted by one more helper, Stephane, and most importantly Fred, one of the few GOphers who can work SI-Timing, the Download/IT hub.

Stretch ourselves to managing the Start as well we just could not quite reach. SLOW came to the rescue and Eloise recruited Jordan, Charlotte, Dan and Iris who ran the Start impeccably; thank you all so much for taking that load off my mind!

Enjoy the next 4 weeks!
