Planners Comments - Helen Rivers, GO
After a damp few days and rain overnight, we were lucky to have a dry event. I’ve very much enjoyed my planning visits to the area – I hope that you appreciated the many cuckoos and the last few bluebells as much as I have. I think that we just about beat the rapidly growing bracken which was beginning to obscure control sites!
When we knew that we were hosting the YBT heats I decided that the finish had to be at our small Roman Temple event centre to give a sense of excitement to the club competition as the incoming runners arrived. I was also keen to get all the courses up to the northern part of the area which I certainly find very beautiful and which gives quite a variety of terrain from the complex contours in the east, through the open heathland and into the lovely runnable conifer forest further north.
Sadly, there are too many parts where brambles rule supreme and which have had to be avoided – they certainly limit route choice.
Unfortunately, the constricted connections between the two areas mean that it is difficult to get the courses out and back by different routes. To avoid a procession back to the finish I decided to take the Green courses on a long leg through the rather less interesting and less runnable western forest. I’m sorry about the long uphill slog here towards the end of your run!
Many thanks to our excellent controller Ian Marsden (HH) who has been extremely helpful and supportive throughout. Many thanks too to our volunteer control hangers and collectors.
Overview
This year's WOW orienteering event will once again take place on Farley Heath, a pretty area of mostly heathland and coniferous forest, which extends into Blackheath. There is a large network of paths. The event is especially targeted at families and juniors, including hosting the South East heat of the Yvette Baker Trophy. There will be Yellow, Orange, Light Green and two Green courses, one Green course designated solely for Yvette Baker Trophy competitors and the other open to all.

On your course
There are no road crossings.
The terrain is undulating with a mix of sandy heathland and managed forest. The bracken is still low in most areas, but is beginning to grow fast as are areas of bramble. As far as possible the courses avoid the worst of this.
There are (a very few) small sections of ruined wire fence on the ground between and within some of the forest areas – take care.
Beware of rabbit holes in the sandy heathland areas!
