Organiser/Planner comments
Almost all the planning & controlling was made on the old 1:10,000 map of
Newlands Corner. I realised early on that we would need a new map but there
was some possibility that it might not make it on time. Therefore I largely
chose routes and control sites that remained viable with the old map.
However, with just a week to go to the event the map arrived. A visit from
Alan & me to check a number of features & routes allowed us to finalise
everything in time.
Maps were printed on GO's new budget laser printer. For less than £300 we
have a printer that can make a good job of printing A4 maps. If you can get
a decent power supply & weather protection then on demand printing is
actually a practical possibility. I wonder whether planners, controllers &
competitors would allow this to happen as a simple technical failure would
have rather embarrassing consequences!
My thanks go to the helpers. And Alan for being on his toes and spotting a
few small errors on control description consistency that may have crept
through otherwise.
Thanks also go to Surrey Wildlife Trust, which manage the open space on
behalf of the Albury Estate, and Guildford Borough Council for allowing
use of the Newlands Corner area. The boundary between Guildford & Surrey is
the earthwall that largely runs East-West through the area, and at its
western end by the boundary stones, one of which we used as a control.

I hope you enjoyed Saturday evening's entertainment. I think this must have
been the highest turn out for a SENiLe event in the last couple of years so
I was very pleased. At one point we were a little concerned that the
pre-printed map numbers were getting low.
Guildford Orienteers would like to thank Albury Estate, The Surrey Wildlife Trust and Guildford Borough Council for their permission to use their land for this orienteering event
