Well didn’t it turn out nice on the day! Some 450 entrants turned up and everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves. This made the effort of organising the event well worthwhile. After the dreadful weather of the day before we were lucky to have a car parking field which drains quickly, and really you would never have guessed it had rained so much. The effect of the wind was another matter. The toilets had been blown round the field on Saturday night, and when we arrived some running repairs were needed. My thanks to Neil Harwood who made them almost as good as new. However they probably weren’t up to the highest standards of hygiene, and my apologies to anyone "inconvenienced" on the day - particularly the competitor who was leaving the gents at the precise moment they blew over again! Similarly my apologies to early finishers who will have found a lack of plastic cups at the refreshment point. This was rectified by the time the real rush began.
On the positive side I hope people valued the on the day results. This is something I wanted to have as personally I hate going home without knowing a good few other results on my own course. However it all needs more helpers so it may not become a regular feature of GO colour coded events.
My thanks to the 40 or so GO members who helped at the event, and especially the team leaders who made it all run smoothly. My thanks also to Mr T M Jones, the owner of the car park field, who was calmness personified when it was tipping down all day on Saturday!

Planners Report - Mark Smith
It is probably fifteen years since I last planned an event and as a longstanding controller it was good to be reminded of the problems a planner faces. The requirement to have a controller really is sensible. Charlie Turner picked up several mistakes and made some very constructive suggestions for improving the courses. Charlie is involved with several other events and I am very grateful for him taking on this additional burden.
Given the problems we have finding event officials I decided to see how easy I could make the planning process. On the whole I don’t think the corners I cut affected the quality of the event but only you the competitors can confirm that. Here are the things I suggest can be done to make a planners (and on occasions organisers) life more easy.
1. Put the start and finish close together and as near as possible to the car park.
2. Keep the number of controls to as few as possible. There were only 41 out on Blackheath and Farley Heath.
3. Allocate control codes at the very beginning and write them on the tape used to mark the control.
4. Draw one map for each course and one map corrections map and then use colour photocopies for the master-maps. Some of the colours were slightly different and I did get a strong complaint from a member of my club that it took him longer to copy his course down. On balance I don’t think the colours were a real problem, there was no chance of one master map being different from another and it saved me a lot of time.
5. Make sure all your control codes, punches and banners are well organised in advance. Despite the appalling weather on Saturday the putting out of controls only took 5 man hours in total.
6. Get as many people as possible lined up to take in controls. Our courses closed at 2.30 but by 4.30 all controls had been collected and all the equipment was properly sorted and returned to our equipment officer in Woking.
Some of the courses were a bit shorter than they should have been but that was due to my desire to avoid the worst of the bracken rather than keeping the number of controls down. I hope it did not spoil anybody’s day.
I should also thank all those who helped me put out controls and collect them in – particularly Iain Cairns who braved the worst of the weather with me on Saturday.
Controllers Comments - Charlie Turner (SLOW)
It was pleasing to see so many White and Yellow course entries, and when combined they almost equalled the total on the Green course.
I was unaware of any significant problems on the day, but if you look through the results there are too many competitors who have no reference to their age class or club. It does help the organising club if your control card stub is completed as if you don’t return from the forest at least they know who they are looking for!
Thank you to Guildford Orienteers, particularly to Mark and Tim for making my controlling an enjoyable task. I checked the controls early on Sunday morning and not in the gale of the day before!
