Organiser comments

I am very pleased to say that this was an interesting and enjoyable event. Entries were close to 300 and so a very successful night championship with most of the categories contested. There were many positive comments received from orienteers attesting to the good quality of the courses and the organisation generally. This on what turned out to be the wettest evening this millennium, was truly praise indeed.

My sincerest thanks to Keith Tonkin who planned the courses and carried a significant amount of the organiser’s duties and helped me gain an introduction to orienteering event organising. Alan Wallis for always keeping us on the straight and narrow and Barbara Lugton for her unfailing endeavours on equipment and enquiries.

Team GO turned out to support the event in what has become trademark style of expertise and efficiency. Thanks to the start team under Christine Kiddier leading the team in flawless execution, Dave Harper and the parking team for incredible tidiness on the car parking (over 150 cars parked in a rain drenched, challenging triangle of open), Peter Couldery leading registration and download team culminating in only slightly wet results printouts and some level of prize giving for a few souls who stayed to the bitter end. Gary Strowbridge for generator and lighting.

Lastly, but perhaps most significantly, I’d like to thank 2 of our junior members for their outstanding contributions on the night: Christopher Couldery for his computer wizardry on download, and George Simmons for his help at the start as well as a very impressive run!

Thank you, the competitor, for attending the event. I hope you enjoyed the area and the courses. Sorry we did not get the weather organised right. The choice of car park largely determined the potential course options. It was always clear that the North & western areas of Blackheath offered the better running and route options, but car parking areas there involve long walks in and out, something we felt unsuitable for a night event where proximity of start and finish are much more desirable. With the rain on the night I hope this was appreciated.

Routegadget is now available online. This is the first event I have planned where this was something to consider and I was slow at working out how to get the information into a format that routegadget uses.

My own thanks go to my small team of helpers who checked control sites, put out and collected controls, some in the dark of Saturday evening and some in the rain of Sunday morning.
