COMMENTS FROM THE OFFICIALS

The weather was kind, the tussocks were cruel but I hope most of our 633 participators enjoyed their run and quite a number their walk. I am sorry that those in Car Park 2 had a walk to the event centre but we did our best....sorry also to early finishers who had the misfortune to encounter what we thought was the terminal demise of the SEOA printer, such is life! For those who were around later, we’re pleased that printing resumed (thanks to the skilful hands of Alastair). Hats off to Jon who had the results up on the web by 4pm!

We've also learned that you can never guess at entry on day numbers, one chap expressed dissatisfaction when we had a sell out on Light Green (as we decided we weren't going to print on the day, maybe the back up plan should have been master maps for colour coded). Good learning points!

A large "thank you" should go to all our volunteer helpers; it is never easy to field enough helpers for an event of this size.

Despite the M3, Chobham Common is a special place and we will be giving a sizeable donation to the Surrey Wildlife Trust who now manage it.

I have two items of lost property to wit one black track suit top with yellow go-faster strips down the arms and one Thomas the Tank Engine football which may be loved by someone out there.

Thank you all for coming along and making the day whizz by!

David Robbins and Deborah Simmons, Organisers

I was very pleased to hear that so many people enjoyed their runs, despite the heather and the extensive marshy areas. Also, with several road crossings, planning challenging routes was limited in those middle sections between the roads. I thought that living locally would make the planning easy - good training runs for me over many months - but I think it meant more time spent out in the field making changes! I appreciate the many hours of review that Philip put in on the courses as we finally converged on sites, descriptions and course leg difficulties and with great patience he also worked with us to improve several areas of the map.

Huge thanks to Neil who helped me with several OCAD features for both the planning and final adjustments to the map, and also for the co-ordination of the map templates and printing when we were still making some changes the week before.

The day dawned bright and clear which was first class conditions for getting the controls out and the day went in a flash. Thanks to those who volunteered their help on the weekend for control hanging and collection: Neil Harwood, James Crawford, Keith Tonkin, Jim Morris, Gareth Davis (and Chris), Alastair Doyle, Ian Cairns - couldn't have done it without you.

Linda Pakuls (GO), Planner

It was a pleasure to control another successful GO event. Linda planned an interesting set of courses which nearly everyone managed to complete within recommend times, despite the rather tough going through heather in some places.

Thanks to the GO team who made everything run smoothly and efficiently, to James Crawford who stepped in at the last minute to assist me with control checkng and to Neil Harwood who put a lot of effort into producing the 3 map variants used. He also managed to sort out the maps for the long courses which turned up a few days before with all the yellow parts a sickly shade of pink! This made the contours rather hard to see and they all had to be reprinted.

I received thanks to pass on from many runners who had enjoyed their runs.
