Colour Coded, St Martha's and the Chantries: 26 November 00 - Results

Keep paging down for the Colour Coded results. Here are the String results.

Controller's Comments

Electronic-O dominates one's reflections. It enabled a small area to be criss-crossed but with controls having to be taken in order (At least, for the most part: a few disqualified competitors pleaded ignorance of this rule, which perhaps needs an occasional reminder?). Above all, the E-system enabled us to react to the control (No. 12 on Brown, 8 on Blue) which was stolen early on and subsequently replaced. Deleting everyone's times for the two legs affected seems a reasonably fair solution - certainly better than (a) voiding those courses or (b) saying "hopefully not too many competitors were badly affected".

The first three placings on both courses would have been the same had no adjustments been made, but further down the results would have looked quite different, especially on Blue. It's clear that those at the sharp end are also quicker to assess that a control is missing, those nearer the 'blunt' end (experienced vets, too) more inclined to keep hunting. The double leg in question took faster runners some six to seven minutes, but on Blue there were times for this section as high as 21. One competitor who would have been 29th without the adjustment is seventh, another 38th instead of 60th. However, the adjustment also means that anyone who ran two particularly fast legs gets no credit for them. As a result, one competitor who did 5:56 for the stretch in question is 14th when, with no adjustments, he would have been fourth. But not fourth among equals. On balance, the argument must be overwhelmingly in favour of recognising those whose time-loss is unquantifiable.

Another advantage of the E-system was that it enabled the start officials to hold competitors until the right master-map was available - at which point they registered their Emit card. Having too few MMs was something I should have picked up on, especially with the two-part maps for Brown and Green and on other courses lots of controls to copy with greater-than-usual care with circles and lines. This controller also committed the cardinal sin of not checking the route, for White and Yellow, from the start to Control 1. It wasn't the straight, clear path that the map showed - but it became a little bit straighter during the morning with some remedial forestry work!

Were the two maps for Brown and Green a good idea? I believe so. A number of competitors will always want to mark both parts on the one map, but many, too, will have been glad of two (relatively) uncluttered maps and a lesser risk of mixing up circles and lines. However, marking parts I and II at the start was unusual. We knew that, and hence there was great effort to ensure this was understood (indeed there was some five separate warnings, written and verbal). It was frustrating, therefore, that one competitor came to a halt in mid-course because he didn't got the message beforehand. I understand why he didn't. An experienced competitor, he would have been locked into that familiar old countdown to blast off, oblivious to little notices on sticks in the start area. What's the lesson from this? It's probably to try and keep special instructions to a minimum (there was already a lot of info connected with Emit).

An event which threw up so many issues was also very enjoyable. At least it was for me, and I believe for most competitors. The Chantries is a very pleasing little wood, the weather a small miracle (as was the drainage in the parking field), the helpers efficient and good-humoured and each of James's courses, from White to Brown perfectly met the spec. I particularly liked his simple, full-bodied Red! And I'm sure the runners appreciated it too.

Planner's Comments

Thank you for coming. Thanks to Iain Cairns and Roger Cracknell for putting out the controls in a monsoon on Saturday afternoon and to Iain C. and Tim Stansfeld for collecting them in after a long day.

I'm sorry we lost control 92 to a vandal before anyone on Blue or Brown got to it. Remarkably, Andrew, our British Army search and rescue professional used his expertise to track the miscreant and located the control hidden in the bracken. Why this particular control was taken (in addition the tape went missing) is beyond me when there were dozens that were more vulnerable. In the end we counted them all out etc..

Using Emit at a colour coded event on a small piece of land was interesting.

Advantages for the planner:
Opportunity for nice legs without concern of people taking them out of order
No need for manned controls
Opportunity to avoid second master maps.
Fewer things to carry and put out in the woods

Disadvantages:
Competitors can preview control sites
Map can be incomprehensible when entire course plotted on one map
Competitors need to organise carrying two maps and keep looking at the right one!

It will be interesting to see how small events develop using this technology.

The Chantries in particular is a delight to run on although a bit hilly. However you are rarely more than 50 metres from a path and never more than 100 metres. Consequently legs were chosen to give you the potential to run direct or with contours if you wanted. In many cases the straight line or the contouring line was the quickest. Should every run be competitive or is it worth considering the training opportunity of colour coded courses in preparation for badge courses later? I know many people choose harder routes in colour coded courses to improve their Badge event performance.

All courses except White and Yellow were sent to the southern open area and I hope you were able to take advantage of the superb views.

Apologies to the Green course people who suffered an abundance of contours, the need to organise their course onto two maps and the lack of a fourth master map.

Finally thanks to Norman Harris for a light but experienced touch in keeping me on track.

James Crawford

Organiser's Comments

Congratulations to whoever organised the weather, they did a superb job! Due to the quality of the team leaders I was pleased to watch as they confidently carried out their duties without too many hiccups. Even the car park remained relatively firm considering the quantity of recent rain.

Taking on emit was a new challenge to most of us; Silva kindly provided the handout to explain the procedure and Janet, at the enquiries, sorted out your practical questions. Next time we would be advised to have a computer link between registration the finish/result tent. Our thanks go particularly to Andrew from BAOC who provided the hardware and the necessary knowledge to ensure the system ran smoothly.

Thank you to Norman for keeping us on track.

Sue Jordan

The official results are on this page. They are derived from the full (un-Controlled) results provided by BAOC, which are (as well as split times) viewable at their site at http://www.baoc.org.uk/results/chantry261100/index.htm. GO is grateful to Andrew Hensman, who has done all the supporting computer work for the BAOC EMIT kit that we borrowed for this event.
