[Organiser] Deborah's comments:
What a perfect autumn day! Given the rain leading up to the event we couldn't have planned better weather! I had organised two tents for shelter, which we simply didn't need.

The event kicked off with me wanting to have a go at map memory but it was key to do it in front of a friendly audience (at heart I'm a bit of a scaredy cat and don't want to look a ninny in front of people I don't know!). This backfired into me organising this trial event extending the idea to newcomers. That's how we got it into the Guildford Millennium Events Diary. Consequently, our main aim was to hold a simple event as a means of raising the profile of orienteering and guess that as many as 15% of the competitors were total first timers. It was a pleasure to see new faces and hope that you enjoyed your first foray into orienteering.

Feedback at the finish line showed that both Yellow (although a bit muddy) and Orange courses were well received and that determination won the day on the Light Green course. I even had a go on the map memory course. After two false starts and help from another club member I did eventually get around. So, even I achieved what I set out to do!

For first timers we have included our latest Club newsletter "allGO", details of membership and a small certificate recognising your achievement. If you are picking this up on the internet let me have your address and I can send you the bits if you would like them. For future events try the South East Orienteering Answerphone on 020 8948 6056.

[Planner] Gary's comments:
I was grateful for the opportunity to have my first full-scale go at planning. There is much more than just hanging out the 26 controls we used; I made a total of 8 visits to Chantries, the first one in July, and looked at 50 or so possible sites chosen from my armchair. The map is a little tired, and the southern escarpment needs a remap. However, I was determined to use it on the Light Green and Norwegian as it is a very nice contrast to the pine woodlands that make up the bulk. It was good to get the one or two nice comments at the finish- I may do this again. Many thanks to Keith Tonkin for his excellent and efficient controlling, expert comments and fit help putting and collecting the flags on the day.

Thank you for coming along and making our Guildford Orienteers event so successful.
