This is the second local Saturday event I have been involved with in the last year and I have to say I am a real fan of the format. I love the informality, the hassle-free parking and start time procedure and the limited number of controls. Is it my imagination or are they also friendlier and less intimidating than the big events?
I learnt from the previous event at Chantries that the one place you cannot cut corners is on the courses. Things have to be correct here. To ensure that there was less likelihood of a slip-up this time, I asked Ian Cairns to act as 'Controller'. It was certainly worth doing so as he picked up a number of things which could have ruined somebody's run. I am very grateful to him, not only for his checking but also for his good humour and stamina in checking and collecting controls.
It was unfortunate that land permission was only finalised after the last edition of All Go. This was always going to hit publicity of the event and on the whole I was pleased to get around 25 people out. That said, Blackheath was at its very best, with excellent runnability and perfect weather (even with a will-of-the-wisp in the carpark). A shame more could not enjoy it.
To my knowledge the only other downbeat note was provided by one competitor on the C course being prevented from entering an area of woodland even though it was in fact (to the best of our knowledge) within bounds. My commiserations to her as otherwise I am sure she would have got below the 10min/km mark.
The next Saturday local event has already been pencilled in after the summer break in September at the Chantries and Newlands Corner. Deborah Simmons is the organiser and I strongly recommend Deborah that you use a 'controller' if only for peace of mind.
