Planner’s Comments – Richard Collyer
Planning the courses for the Godalming Urban was a pleasant exercise, and I’d like to thank the controller Linda Pakuls for her guidance and oversight, and James Crawford for providing the map. The main challenge in planning was the various out of bounds areas which initially included the old school buildings, which fortunately were eventually limited to just a few pristine cricket pitches. This allowed for a good mix of terrain: urban, parkland, school buildings and woodland. I hope this provided a good mix of techniques to challenge the brain. The day was helped further by the unseasonably warm weather, which made it feel like a summers day.

Organiser’s Comments – Frederick Smith
Following the Guildford City Race in 2016, the club had been considering an alternative urban event at Godalming and we were able to get the agreement of Charterhouse school to make this happen in the middle of the school’s 2 week October half term. I’d like to thank Nicola Bonner from Charterhouse for her role in providing us with such a straightforward but very interesting and historic venue and guiding us to a set of courses that didn’t interfere with its use as a wedding venue later that day. Thanks too for James Crawford’s diligence in creating the map, Richard Collyer’s use of his local knowledge as Planner (he lives within the area of the map) and Linda Pakuls travelling up from Wimborne to be Controller.

This was my 4th event as Organiser and brought new challenges in that a competitor on course 3 broke his ankle within the Charterhouse complex and only 5 minutes from the start. Despite having the advantages of getting to him quickly with easy road access, it took nearly 3 hours for an ambulance to arrive, during which time members of our team (special thanks to Karen Mills Hicks and Angela Darley) were with him and helping him through his discomfort – unfortunately it will mean at least an 8 week hiatus in his orienteering! Hoping everyone else had a good day, “Hogwarts for real” was one of the comments.
